PDP: Goodluck Jonathan Free to Contest 2027 Presidential Election

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is constitutionally eligible to contest for the presidency in the 2027 general election. The clarification was made by the party’s state chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, who emphasized that while the former president has the right to run, he must adhere to the party’s democratic processes.

Elder Abraham Amah addressed the growing speculation regarding Jonathan’s potential interest in seeking the party’s presidential ticket. He stated that Jonathan, as a respected leader of the party, “enjoys the constitutional right to contest for the party’s ticket if he so desires.”

However, he added that the party’s presidential candidate will be determined through a “free, fair, transparent, and democratic presidential convention.” The PDP remains an open and inclusive platform where any eligible member is free to aspire to any office, provided they follow party guidelines and the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

Elder Amah noted that while some influential groups within the PDP believe Jonathan is qualified to give the party a strong and competitive national representation, the decision ultimately rests with the delegates at the convention. He also stated that the Abia PDP’s doors are open to all intending presidential aspirants who wish to formally present their manifestos and visions for Nigeria.
