Lagos Police Plead for More Victims to Testify in E-Hailing Driver Rape, Robbery Investigation

The Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, has made a significant breakthrough in addressing the escalating fears over passenger safety, confirming the arrest of a taxi driver linked to multiple horrific cases of sexual assault, robbery, and kidnapping. Following an intensified public safety campaign, authorities are now making an urgent appeal for more victims to come forward to solidify the case against the suspect.

The arrested individual has been identified as Adedayo Adegbola, a commercial driver operating within the Lagos metropolis. His apprehension followed a swift investigative response to a viral surge of social media posts where multiple female passengers detailed remarkably similar accounts of being victimized during rides. This consistent pattern allowed investigators to establish a clear connection, leading to the arrest.

Police officials have confirmed that Adegbola is currently in custody. His vehicle, a red Toyota Corolla with registration number JJJ 226 HT, was recovered and is being held as crucial evidence linking the suspect to the various crimes. Authorities have indicated that the criminal charges, currently being prepared, are expected to encompass multiple counts of sexual assault, armed robbery, and general assault.

A Plea for Anonymity and Justice

In a statement released today, Sunday, November 2, 2025, the Lagos State Police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of all commuters and emphasized that community cooperation is vital to eradicating these criminal activities.

“We recognize the immense trauma and fear associated with these crimes,” a police spokesperson stated. “We are therefore urging any other victims who experienced similar attacks involving a commercial driver to come forward. We guarantee that all information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality, and we are prepared to grant anonymity to those who prefer it.”

The development comes amidst widespread public anxiety over the security risks faced by daily commuters, particularly female passengers, using ride-hailing and conventional taxi services. Advocacy groups have applauded the arrest but stressed the need for continuous community engagement and a thorough review of safety standards, including stricter driver background checks and enforcement of passenger safety protocols across all transport platforms in Nigeria’s commercial hub.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are actively working to identify and apprehend any accomplices who may have been involved in the criminal ring.
