Ogun Police Debunk Viral Video Claiming Impending Herdsmen Attack on Ajebo Community, Confirms Settlers are Unarmed, Peaceful Residents

The Ogun State Police Command, moved swiftly to reassure residents and quell widespread panic by debunking a viral video circulating on social media that falsely claimed armed herdsmen were preparing to launch an attack on the Ajebo community in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.

The debunking comes amid nationwide anxiety following the declaration of a security emergency and mass abductions in neighboring states, underscoring the severe impact of security-related disinformation.

The spokesperson for the command, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed that a joint team of security operatives was immediately deployed to the area mentioned in the video to verify the claims.

“Following a thorough sweep and investigation of the area, the operatives discovered that the Fulani settlers in Ajebo are not hostile migrants but long-standing residents, living peacefully within the community,” CSP Odutola stated. “No arms or suspicious activities were detected. The settlers were found to be unarmed.”

Trade, Not Terrorism

CSP Odutola explained that the absence of adult males from the settlement was due to their routine economic pattern, having travelled to Oyo State for trading activities. Further investigation revealed an extended RUGA location that has reportedly been in existence for over ten years, contradicting the viral video’s narrative of an imminent invasion.

The Police are maintaining a presence in the area as a precautionary measure, emphasizing that the situation is calm. The traditional ruler of the community, Oba Rueben Oluwole, was invited to clarify the land allocation given to the settlers.

The Command urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified videos and information, especially those generated by technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), which are increasingly being used to create misleading and mischievous content designed solely to cause panic and social disruption. The police stressed the importance of relying only on official communication channels for security updates.
