SERAP Drags 36 Governors and Wike to Court; Demands Full ‘Account Statement’ of Trillions Spent on Security Votes!

The secret “bank accounts” of Nigeria’s state governors and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, are about to be blown wide open if a new lawsuit by SERAP is anything to go by. The advocacy group has officially sued all 36 governors and the Minister for failing to explain how they spent trillions of naira in “security votes” while Nigerians continue to face kidnapping and banditry.

For years, “security votes” have been a untouchable subject in Nigerian politics a massive pile of cash handed to leaders every month with zero requirement to show how it was spent. SERAP is now saying “enough is enough,” arguing that in a democracy, no money should be spent in total darkness.

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court, demands that the governors and Wike publish detailed documents showing exactly who got what from the security funds. SERAP argues that it is a slap in the face of taxpayers for leaders to collect billions for “security” while citizens are being snatched from their homes and schools on a daily basis.

“The public has a right to know if this money is actually fighting crime or if it’s just ending up in private pockets,” SERAP stated. The group is also asking the court to let anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC and ICPC loose on any governor who cannot account for their spending.

As the legal battle begins, all eyes are on the FCT Minister and the state governors to see if they will finally open their books or continue to hide behind the “security secret” curtain.
