Edo Govt Disowns Governor’s Aide Over Viral Video Threatening to Arrest Peter Obi and Ban ADC Campaigns; Police Command Launches Security Probe into ‘Inflammatory’ Remarks

The Edo State Government has moved swiftly to contain a brewing political storm, officially distancing the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo from controversial remarks made by an aide regarding the restriction of opposition activities. In a statement released today Monday, April 27, 2026, the government characterized the comments as unauthorized and a “complete misrepresentation” of the Governor’s commitment to the rule of law and democratic freedom.

The crisis was triggered by a viral video showing the aide addressing the State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika. In the recording, the aide insisted that the “new sheriff in town” would not tolerate electioneering by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other opposition blocs. He went as far as threatening that leaders of the “Obidient” movement, including Peter Obi, would face immediate arrest if they dared to mobilize within the state’s borders.

“The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is a firm believer in the constitutional right to freedom of movement and association,” the government’s clarification read. “The remarks made by the individual in the viral video were purely personal and do not reflect the strategic or operational mindset of this administration. Edo remains open to all Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliation.”

The Edo State Police Command has also issued a rebuttal to clear its leadership of any perceived complicity. Police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, noted that while the Commissioner was present in the video, he at no point endorsed or adopted the aide’s rhetoric. Ikoedem added that the Command is currently evaluating the video to assess whether the remarks were intended to incite violence or were simply a display of “misguided showmanship” ahead of the 2027 transition cycle.

The incident has sparked a wave of condemnation from civil society groups and opposition leaders, who have called for the immediate sack of the aide to demonstrate the government’s sincerity. With the Supreme Court still processing leadership disputes within the major opposition parties, the political “trenches” in Edo have become a focal point for the 2027 campaign narrative. For now, the Okpebholo administration appears focused on damage control, emphasizing its “SHINE Agenda” and the need for a peaceful, pluralistic political environment as the nation prepares for the next general election.
