NDPHC Revives 450MW Alaoji Power Plant in Abia After 3-Year Blackout; Clears Massive Debts to Restore Gas Supply and National Grid Dispatch

The industrial and residential corridors of the South-East have received a massive energy boost following the successful resuscitation of the 450-megawatt Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant in Abia State. After sitting dormant for 36 months, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has officially brought the multi-million dollar facility back to life, successfully ending a bitter commercial dispute that crippled its operations.

The heavy technical and financial rescue was confirmed during a high-level strategic briefing between the NDPHC Managing Director, Jennifer Adighije, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti. The plant had been locked down since 2023 after severe disagreements broke out over gas metering points. The friction, coupled with mounting financial debts, forced the facility’s primary fuel supplier, TotalEnergies, to completely shut off the gas valves, plunging the massive turbines into an extended slumber.

Moving swiftly to execute a turnaround, the current NDPHC leadership prioritized the Alaoji facility, identifying it as a critical asset for stabilizing the national grid. According to Adighije, the company completely defrayed its outstanding financial obligations to TotalEnergies and aggressively executed remedial repairs on the defective gas pipelines feeding the plant.

The physical rehabilitation extended far beyond the fuel supply lines. Engineering teams completed extensive electromechanical overhauls on the plant’s core infrastructure, successfully reviving three heavy-duty generating units GT1, GT22, and GT23. With the turbines spinning once again, the plant is now pushing approximately 375 megawatts of electricity into the national transmission network without any major evacuation bottlenecks.

For the host state, the revival of the Alaoji plant perfectly aligns with a highly ambitious local energy blueprint. Governor Alex Otti, who recently initiated the ring-fencing of the Umuahia electricity market, described the plant’s restoration as a vital engine for economic and industrial expansion. The state government is already setting up a commercial portal to off-take at least 100 megawatts from the facility to guarantee uninterrupted power for the eight local government areas within the Umuahia axis.

With the facility officially out of the trenches, the NDPHC is already looking toward the future. Authorities confirmed that the Alaoji plant possesses the structural framework to expand its total generation output to 800 megawatts, and eventually scale up to 1,100 megawatts. As the country shifts toward a decentralized, bilateral electricity market, the revival of the Alaoji giant stands as a monumental victory for both the national grid and the manufacturing hubs of the South-East.
