Weeping Families Rejoice as 46 Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren and Teachers Rescued From Terrorists After 56-Day Nightmare
Tears of pure joy, emotional singing, and wild celebrations swept through rural communities in Ogbomoso following the official announcement that all 46 school pupils and teachers kidnapped by a ruthless band of armed terrorists have been successfully rescued alive.
The mass rescue marks the triumphant conclusion of a heartbreaking 56-day national crisis that began on May 15, when dozens of gunmen riding heavy motorcycles invaded three academic settings—Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School—in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota neighborhoods of Oriire. The bandits forced the children, along with their teachers and secondary school principal Folawe Alamu, into the dense wilderness of the Old Oyo National Park.
Breaking the news to an anxious public, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the rescue was the direct result of a highly coordinated, multi-agency offensive that finally broke the back of the kidnapping ring.
The final security breach turned into a fierce battlefield shootout deep inside the forest cover. Superior military and police tactical teams successfully outmaneuvered the perimeter guards, neutralizing several armed bandits on the spot. Eight key members of the syndicate were pinned down, disarmed, and safely transferred to high-security DSS holding facilities for deep intelligence interrogation.
Importantly, the presidency used the breakthrough to firmly dispel circulating rumors that the federal government had bowed to the terrorists’ extortion demands. The abductors had previously threatened the lives of the hostages, demanding an absolute exchange for the high-profile jailed Ansaru terrorist kingpin, Mahmud Muhammad Usman.
“There was absolutely no quid pro quo or compromise in this rescue operation,” Bayo Onanuga maintained in his executive brief. “One of the primary terrorist kingpins whose unconditional release had been repeatedly demanded by the kidnappers remains securely behind bars and is actively being prosecuted by the state for his historic atrocities. Our security agencies chose to rely on precision intelligence and operational grit to bring our citizens home safely.”
While the safe recovery of the children has brought overwhelming relief to millions of homes, the victory remains deeply scarred by tragedy. Weeks into the abduction, the captors brutally murdered a beloved local mathematics teacher, Mr. Michael Oyedokun, in an attempt to intimidate state authorities and force a halt to the closing military dragnet. President Tinubu has extended his profound condolences to the Oyedokun family, reiterating that the state will not rest until every remaining collaborator tied to the teacher’s murder faces final judicial accountability.
With the freed pupils and educators finally back in safe territory, emergency response networks and medical personnel have been deployed to execute comprehensive physical evaluations, trauma care, and mental health counseling. As the community begins the long process of healing, the federal government has issued a stern charge to state administrators across the country to immediately reinforce local vigilante networks and build ironclad defensive buffers around rural schools to ensure such a nightmare never happens again.
