Crypto Scammers Take Over Official Military X Account: Defence Headquarters Issues Urgent Public Warning
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has raised an alarm after cyber attackers breached its official X (formerly Twitter) page, using the high-profile platform to push cryptocurrency scams to nearly a million followers.
The security breach was confirmed by Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, who disclosed that specialized technical teams have activated emergency cybersecurity protocols to contain the attack and regain total control of the handle (@DHQNigeria). Prior to the military’s public statement, unauthorized posts promoting fake crypto reward schemes and external phishing links began appearing on the page.
Warning the public to remain vigilant, military authorities urged citizens, media organizations, and international partners to completely disregard any strange or suspicious content published on the compromised X handle until full recovery is confirmed. The DHQ stressed that no official military statement or security update should be taken from the platform during this period.
To ensure a continuous flow of authentic information, the Defence Headquarters directed the public to monitor its verified alternative channels on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The military assured Nigerians that robust measures are being implemented to fortify its digital infrastructure and prevent future unauthorized breaches.
