US Encourages Nigeria to Continue Protecting Communities in the Middle Belt

The United States has praised Nigeria for its response to recent attacks in the Middle Belt region, particularly in Plateau State. The US Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs made this statement on X, highlighting the need for continued efforts to protect communities in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

The bureau commended Nigeria for its strong actions against attacks by Fulani militant groups. It expressed a commitment to working alongside the Nigerian government to ensure the safety of Christians in the Middle Belt. The bureau specifically urged Nigeria to maintain its momentum in defending the Barkin Ladi communities.

This call for action comes amid ongoing insecurity in various parts of Nigeria’s Middle Belt, including Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger states. These areas have faced numerous challenges, including attacks, kidnappings, communal clashes, and conflicts between farmers and herders.

Barkin Ladi has seen a troubling rise in violence in recent months. For instance, on September 27, six people were killed and two others injured during an attack at a mining site in Lajam Marit village, located in the Ropp district of Barkin Ladi. The victims were shot while working at the site, and the injured were taken to a hospital for care.
