Micah Richards Expresses Heartbreak Over Manchester City’s Guilty Verdict
Micah Richards, a former defender for Manchester City, has expressed his deep sadness after the Premier League found the club guilty of financial misconduct. The verdict revealed that Manchester City had created fake contracts with commercial partners, leading to over £830 million in hidden funding for its football activities.
The Premier League announced on Tuesday that the club was guilty of violating financial rules from the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons. They were also found guilty of not cooperating with the investigation in most respects. Manchester City continues to deny any wrongdoing and has until October 2 to appeal the decision.
Richards, who played for Manchester City from a young age and was part of the team that won the Premier League title in 2012, shared his feelings on the podcast The Rest is Football. He said the use of terms like ‘sham contracts’ in the verdict left him feeling devastated. “I would die for that club,” he said, highlighting the emotional toll this news has taken on him and the fans.
He also mentioned a local family he stayed with during his academy days, who were upset by the news. “My digs man, he rang me and he was literally in tears,” Richards said. He emphasized the heartbreak felt by long-time supporters of the club.
Richards expressed mixed emotions about the situation, feeling sad and angry, but also confused by the club’s denial of the charges. The comments came after the Premier League confirmed the findings of an independent commission that has been investigating Manchester City for years.
Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak stated that the club is confident it can prove its innocence. Meanwhile, chief executive Ferran Soriano told staff and players that the commission ignored what he called ‘irrefutable evidence’. The club has the right to appeal the ruling, and any potential penalties will be decided later.
