FIFA President Gianni Infantino Apologizes for Scrapped Investment Plan
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has apologized to the FIFA Council for a recently scrapped investment plan. This proposal would have given part of FIFA’s commercial rights to a private investment firm but was dropped shortly after it was announced.
The FIFA Council met in Zurich to discuss the proposal, which has raised concerns about transparency and decision-making within the organization. Infantino faced questions not only about the investment plan but also about other issues, including a red-card ban involving United States striker Folarin Balogun and funding for national football associations.
After a lengthy meeting, Debbie Hewitt, chair of the Football Association and FIFA vice-president, expressed disappointment over unanswered questions. She noted that the Council had requested specific documents related to the proposal but had not received them. Hewitt emphasized the need for these documents to understand the reasons behind the proposal and to assess whether the involved parties acted appropriately.
Hewitt stated that Infantino’s apology focused mainly on not presenting the proposal to the Council beforehand. She insisted that if he truly regrets the decision, he should share more information with the Council. UEFA, the governing body for European football, has been critical of Infantino and is pursuing legal action to obtain documents related to the proposal.
Hewitt highlighted that access to the documents is crucial for determining if any further actions are needed. Despite Infantino’s apology, she mentioned that her view on his leadership remains unchanged, stating, “From my position, nothing has shifted.” The ongoing controversy continues to put pressure on Infantino, with calls for more transparency regarding the abandoned investment plan.
