Nigeria’s House of Representatives Moves to Establish Drug Rehabilitation Centers

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has taken a step towards addressing drug abuse by passing a bill for the second reading. This bill aims to give the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) the authority to set up and run drug treatment and rehabilitation centers nationwide.

Sponsored by Hon. Garba Mohammed, the bill seeks to change existing laws to ensure that these centers are professionally managed by qualified medical practitioners. During the debate, Hon. Mohammed highlighted the need for better treatment and support for people struggling with drug addiction, emphasizing that the current approach focuses too much on enforcement and prosecution.

He pointed out that drug abuse has become a serious public health issue in Nigeria, especially among young people. The rise in substance dependence has put pressure on families, communities, and healthcare systems. Hon. Mohammed noted that while the NDLEA has been successful in enforcing drug laws, there is a growing need for treatment and rehabilitation services.

The proposed bill aims to create a clear framework for managing treatment and rehabilitation centers. It recognizes that drug dependence should be treated as a medical and psychological issue, requiring professional support and care. The bill would allow the NDLEA to operate these centers under the supervision of qualified medical staff, improving recovery outcomes for individuals.

Hon. Mohammed expressed hope that this legislation would lead to a more balanced approach to drug control, combining law enforcement with medical treatment and social reintegration. He believes this will not only help those affected by drug abuse but also reduce drug-related crimes in the country.
