Nigerian Education Loan Fund Clarifies Student Loan is Voluntary Support
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has stated that students in higher education should only apply for loans if they truly need financial help. This message was shared in a statement from Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, in Abuja on Wednesday.
NELFUND explained that the loan program aims to help students overcome financial challenges and ensure that no eligible Nigerian student is denied education due to money issues. The organization stressed that students who can pay for their education do not have to apply for these loans.
According to NELFUND, making loans mandatory for all students would go against the program’s goal of supporting those who genuinely need assistance. They reiterated, “The student loan scheme is a support mechanism, not an obligation.”
NELFUND encouraged universities, student leaders, and other groups to share accurate information about the loan program and assist students who need financial help in applying for it. The loans are interest-free, designed to ease the financial burdens of pursuing higher education.
However, the fund reminded potential borrowers that the loans must be repaid according to the Student Loans Act, and applicants should fully understand the terms before applying. NELFUND’s main goal is to ensure that financial difficulties do not stop eligible students from achieving their educational goals.
This initiative is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to make higher education more accessible by providing financial support to students who may struggle with the costs.
