Nigerian Health Officials Assure Public on Ebola Case Management

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, has assured Nigerians that there is no need for alarm regarding a confirmed case of Ebola in the Federal Capital Territory. This statement came after a meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila.

A woman who recently arrived in Nigeria from Uganda has tested positive for the disease and is currently in isolation at a private hospital in Abuja. Professor Pate emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing the spread of the virus, similar to how it was managed during the outbreak in 2014.

He stated that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention is on alert and will implement measures to contain the situation. “We are collaborating with Uganda, and we have identified this one case. We are conducting contact tracing and putting containment measures in place to protect the public,” he said.

Professor Pate encouraged the public to remain vigilant but not to panic. He urged Nigerians to rely on information from trusted sources and to avoid spreading misinformation. The government has established an incident management system that operates around the clock to monitor the situation.

He reassured the public that Nigeria has the necessary public health resources to handle this crisis. “This is an imported case, and we are taking steps to contain it. If the situation changes, we will inform Nigerians promptly,” he added.
