NANS Calls for Enhanced Support for NESREA to Improve Environmental Enforcement
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is urging the Federal Government to provide more support to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA). This support would help NESREA improve its ability to enforce environmental laws.
During a press briefing in Abuja, NANS National Secretary-General, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, praised NESREA’s Director-General, Professor Innocent Barikor, for his leadership since he took office in May 2024. NANS highlighted the need for better funding, modern equipment, and continuous training for NESREA staff to enhance their operations.
NANS pointed out that Nigeria faces serious environmental issues that require more than just rules; effective enforcement and better teamwork between federal and state environmental agencies are also essential. The association noted that NESREA conducted over 1,600 inspections and closed down nearly 100 facilities for breaking environmental laws in 2024. These included recycling plants and construction sites that posed risks to public health.
The students’ group emphasized that economic growth should not harm human health or the environment. They also mentioned NESREA’s efforts to implement new regulations on battery control and improve its monitoring capabilities through upgrades to its laboratory in Port Harcourt.
NANS called for the government to enhance NESREA’s presence across the country while ensuring the agency remains independent. They stressed that environmental standards should be enforced fairly, regardless of the influence of individuals or organizations.
Furthermore, NANS encouraged NESREA to be transparent about its enforcement actions and to engage more with students, youth organizations, and local communities. The association believes that strengthening NESREA is vital for protecting public health and ensuring a sustainable future for Nigerian students.
