Leaders Urge Media to Strengthen Democracy and Fight Corruption Ahead of 2027 Elections
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Minister of Works David Umahi, and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, have called on the media to help strengthen democracy and fight corruption as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. They spoke at the 2026 Press Week event held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Enugu.
The event, themed “Strengthening Democracy Through Responsible Journalism: 2027 Polls in Focus,” gathered political leaders, journalists, and other stakeholders to discuss the media’s role in promoting accountability and good governance.
Governor Mbah, represented by Dr. Malachy Agbo, the Commissioner for Information, highlighted the importance of journalism in fostering peace and development. Minister Umahi, through his media aide Emma Uzor, urged journalists to be cautious when reporting on security matters, warning that careless reporting could harm national security.
Umahi emphasized that journalists must remain professional and objective, stating, “If this democracy dies, it’s the journalists that will be held responsible.” He acknowledged that politicians sometimes view journalists as adversaries but insisted that the media is essential for holding leaders accountable.
EFCC Chairman Olukoyede, represented by Daniel Isei, the South Zonal Director, praised the media for its significant contributions to fighting corruption. He encouraged journalists to continue scrutinizing public institutions while avoiding sensationalism that could lead to public distrust.
Chief Anthony Ani, a former Attorney-General, urged journalists to hold both political leaders and the judiciary accountable as the elections approach. He expressed concern over the possibility of Nigeria drifting towards a one-party system, which could weaken democratic competition.
Lawrence Njoku, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, welcomed the attendees and stressed the importance of credible information and accountability in journalism. He encouraged journalists to remain committed to truth and fairness, especially as the 2027 elections will test their credibility.
