World Leaders Praise Lula’s Re-election in Brazil Amidst Political Tensions

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva celebrated his re-election victory on October 25, 2026, after a closely contested runoff election in Sao Paulo. Lula won with 51.8% of the vote against his opponent Flavio Bolsonaro, who received 48.2% and has refused to accept the results.

World leaders quickly congratulated Lula on his win. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her joy on social media, saying, “Long live democracy, the people of Brazil won.” Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel called it a “historic victory” that supports peace and social justice.

Other leaders also shared their support. Argentina’s former president Cristina Kirchner commented that Lula inspired his fellow citizens to achieve this victory. Uruguay’s President Yamandu Orsi spoke with Lula and praised the democratic process of the election.

Despite Lula’s win, the political landscape in South America remains complex. Countries like Argentina and Chile have shifted towards more conservative governments recently. Peru’s President Keiko Fujimori celebrated the election as a “democratic day” and expressed a desire to work together on shared issues, including the Amazon.

In Europe, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen hailed Lula’s victory as a win for democracy. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez viewed it as part of a larger “progressive comeback” in politics. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need to strengthen ties with Brazil.

Leaders from other countries, including India and China, also extended their congratulations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed eagerness to deepen the partnership between India and Brazil. A spokesperson from China stated their willingness to collaborate with Brazil for mutual benefit.
