House of Representatives to Investigate Death of Corps Member in Enugu

The House of Representatives has agreed to investigate the death of a corps member named Etimbuk Sunday in Enugu State. This decision follows a request from Representative Unyime Idem, who raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the death at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Awgu.

Idem claims that Sunday died due to alleged negligence and delays in receiving medical care. He stated that the corps member’s condition worsened after he was given medication, leading to questions about the quality of the drugs provided.

In a related matter, the House is also addressing the issue of fake products in Nigeria. They are urging the federal government to take immediate action to prevent further loss of life. Relevant committees have been tasked with working alongside agencies like the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to tackle this problem.

NAFDAC has started its own investigation into Sunday’s death. They have asked the public not to jump to conclusions until their findings are complete. Initial assessments suggest that Sunday may have died from kidney failure due to severe dehydration and shock. However, it is still unclear if the medications he received contributed to his death.

According to reports, Sunday first visited the camp clinic with symptoms of severe malaria and was treated. He returned days later with worsening symptoms and was eventually referred to a hospital, where he died. NAFDAC has collected samples of the medicines for further testing and is reviewing the treatment he received at the camp clinic.

The Senate has also announced plans for a separate investigation into the matter. This follows a motion from Senator Aniekan Bassey, who called for a review of medical services at all NYSC camps across the country.

Earlier reports indicated that Sunday had taken what was believed to be fake medication and experienced delays in receiving necessary medical attention. The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for a thorough investigation, emphasizing the need for accountability and better medical care for corps members.
