The Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) recently visited the commission’s office in Enugu State. The purpose of the visit was to assess the commission’s facilities and its readiness to operate effectively.
During the visit, the SEDC Managing Director, Mark Okoye, informed the senators about the commission’s ongoing projects aimed at boosting economic growth and improving infrastructure in the region. These projects include plans for gas pipelines and railways, along with partnerships with various stakeholders such as government agencies and private companies.
Okoye also discussed the South-East Vision 2050 initiative, which brings together government officials, business leaders, and civil society to create a long-term development plan for the area. He highlighted the South-East Venture Capital Programme, which has provided funding to 25 startups in the region to encourage entrepreneurship.
The committee inspected both the temporary and new headquarters of the SEDC. They looked at the office spaces and facilities to determine if they were suitable for the commission’s work. This inspection is part of the committee’s role to ensure that the commission is using public resources properly and fulfilling its mission.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the committee chairman, expressed his satisfaction with the progress made at the new headquarters. He encouraged the management to continue their efforts and ensure that the benefits of the commission’s projects reach local communities across the five South-East states.
The SEDC was created to address development challenges in the South-East region, which includes Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. The commission aims to drive economic development and improve infrastructure for the residents of these areas.
