Nigeria’s Flamingos Reach U-17 World Cup Quarter-Finals After Defeating Mexico

Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. They achieved this by defeating Mexico 2-1 on Thursday.

Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan scored for Nigeria, helping the team bounce back from an earlier loss to Poland. Despite a late goal from Mexico’s Emily Delgado, the Flamingos held on to secure the win.

The Flamingos started their tournament with a 2-1 defeat to Poland but quickly turned things around. They won against Puerto Rico 2-0 and then surprised everyone by beating the defending champions, North Korea, 3-1.

In the match against Mexico, Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 39th minute after taking advantage of a defensive mistake. The goal was checked by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) but was allowed to stand. Dunstan then added a second goal in the 70th minute, reacting quickly to a rebound.

Mexico managed to score in the second minute of added time, but it was not enough to change the outcome. The Flamingos finished second in their group, earning six points and scoring six goals in total.

Next, Nigeria will face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1. Venezuela won their Round of 16 match against Germany 1-0, and the Flamingos will need to keep up their strong performance to move closer to the final.
