TETFund Launches 45 Innovation Hubs in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is starting the creation of 45 innovation hubs in universities and colleges throughout Nigeria. This initiative aims to enhance research, support technological innovation, and help turn local ideas into marketable products.

According to Arc. Babatunde Olajide, the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at TETFund, these hubs will give researchers and academics the tools they need to develop home-grown technologies. The goal is to transform research findings into products that can contribute to Nigeria’s economy.

Olajide spoke at the closing ceremony of the Research for Impact (R4i) Initiative, highlighting that education is essential for nation-building. He emphasized that technology is crucial for generating wealth and improving global competitiveness. He also noted the importance of creating local solutions instead of relying solely on foreign technologies.

The R4i Initiative, in partnership with Innov8 Technology Hub, offers training, access to innovation facilities, and mentorship for researchers. Olajide mentioned that previous participants have successfully developed prototypes, some of which have been patented, showing the program’s effectiveness in linking academic research with real-world applications.

To improve the program’s impact, TETFund has increased the number of participants from each institution from one to four. This change aims to foster teamwork and knowledge-sharing among researchers from different fields.

Olajide encouraged participants to make the most of the opportunities provided by the program, stating that the end of the training marks the start of efforts to commercialize their developed products. He urged them to continue refining their ideas and focus on creating solutions that meet market demands.
