N264.12 Billion in Unspent Education Grants Raises Concerns for Nigerian Schools

Many children arrive at school hoping for a better future, only to find broken desks and leaking roofs. This situation is made worse by the news that ₦264.12 billion in matching grants from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) remains unspent. This money was meant to improve schools but has not been used, according to a report from UBEC.

As of July 2025, all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory reported unspent balances. Benue State had the largest amount, with ₦19.18 billion. Other states like Imo, Osun, Kwara, and Delta also reported significant unspent funds. This raises questions about why the money has not been used, especially when the needs are so clear.

For example, if it costs ₦10 million to fix a classroom, just ₦1 billion could restore 100 classrooms. This could provide safe roofs, secure windows, and proper learning environments for children. However, delays in using the funds have left many schools in disrepair.

Governors and education officials are now under pressure to explain why these funds remain untouched. Parents should not have to investigate why their children are not receiving the education they deserve. The delay in using these funds raises suspicions about whether they are being mismanaged or if there is a lack of urgency in addressing the needs of schools.

The UBEC report highlights that the responsibility does not end with the transfer of funds. The commission must monitor how these funds are used by state education boards. If there are delays, they must take corrective actions. Furthermore, state lawmakers should demand accountability from education officials and ensure that funds are used properly.

As elections approach, parents are encouraged to ask candidates about the education funds that have yet to be utilized. Promises for the future cannot replace the urgent need for action on existing funds. Transparency is essential; governments must publish details about how much money has been received, spent, and what projects are in progress.

Every day that passes without action means more lost opportunities for children. Parents are making sacrifices for their children’s education, and it is time for governors to honor their commitments to use the funds responsibly.
