RCCG Calls on Journalists to Verify Images Before Publication

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has asked journalists and media outlets to check the authenticity of photographs before sharing them. This request comes after an old image of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the church’s General Overseer, was shared online with misleading claims.

The photo in question showed Adeboye holding a placard and was incorrectly claimed to be from a protest against former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. However, the church clarified that the image was taken during a peaceful prayer walk on February 2, 2020, organized by the Christian Association of Nigeria to mourn victims of violence and pray for safety in the country.

Pastor Adeboye noted that the prayer walk was not a political protest and emphasized the importance of verifying information before publication. He expressed concern over the media’s failure to investigate the true context of the photograph, urging journalists to ensure they have all the facts before reporting.

The RCCG stated that the image had been reused and given a new caption to misrepresent Adeboye’s stance on political matters. They confirmed that independent fact-checkers found the claims about the photo to be misleading.

During a recent Thanksgiving Service, Adeboye reminded creative professionals, including filmmakers and writers, of their responsibility to promote positive values through their work. He highlighted the significant influence they have on public opinion and encouraged them to share stories that inspire hope and integrity.

The RCCG also clarified that while they pray for all leaders, they do not endorse any political party. They invited media organizations to reach out for clarification on any reports involving their leadership, assuring that their communication channels are open.
