Peter Obi Promises to Tackle Kidnapping and Insecurity in Nigeria
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to confront kidnappers directly, stating that his administration will not be intimidated by criminal activities. He made this statement during a town hall meeting on Wednesday at the Metropolitan Hotel in Calabar.
Obi emphasized that Nigeria can no longer accept the high levels of insecurity, particularly the kidnapping of schoolchildren. He declared, “Under our watch, anybody that kidnaps schoolchildren and goes into that bush, we will be in that bush with him. We are not scared of him.”
He highlighted the importance of national unity as a key priority for his administration, arguing that a divided country struggles to address security issues effectively. Obi said, “If we unite Nigeria today, we will have the strength to fight insecurity.”
Obi also discussed his plans for education and healthcare, stating that these areas are crucial for national development. He pledged that an NDC government would invest significantly in both sectors.
In addition, Obi described the partnership with his running mate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, as a new approach to governance. He stated that they would work together to drive change in Nigeria, contrasting this with the traditional roles of president and vice president.
On the issue of corruption, Obi promised that an NDC government would work hard to combat the misuse of public funds. He urged that public money should be used for the welfare of the people and not for personal gain.
During the meeting, Obi encouraged attendees to ask questions and share their thoughts freely, stating that there would be no restrictions on comments.
