Health Workers Union Declares No Endorsements for 2027 Elections

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) announced that it will not endorse or financially support any candidates in the 2027 elections. This decision was made during their National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

Comrade Kabiru Ado Sani, the union’s president, emphasized that the health workers will not take a passive role in the elections. Instead, they aim to demand enforceable commitments regarding their welfare, salary structure, and outstanding agreements with the government.

MHWUN stated that its members should not be used merely for political mobilization. The union insists that it will remain a trade union and not a political party, allowing members to vote according to their own beliefs.

During the meeting, Sani highlighted that the union’s influence should focus on ensuring that candidates address health workers’ unresolved issues rather than directing how members should vote. He stressed that agreements made with the government must be honored and are not just political promises.

Sani warned that the next administration will inherit not only government assets but also the obligations to health workers, including salary arrears and ongoing negotiations. He urged members to participate peacefully in the electoral process and to avoid actions that could harm the union’s reputation.

The union’s meeting took place under the theme, “Health Workers and Socio-Economic Crisis: Implications for the 2027 General Election,” highlighting the importance of understanding how the election outcomes will affect health workers in Nigeria.
