Zelensky Expresses Hope for Increased US Support After Midterm Elections
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed optimism that the recent success of the Democratic Party in the US midterm elections could lead to greater support for Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia.
Zelensky shared his thoughts in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, stating that he hopes this shift in US politics will encourage stronger financial and military assistance for Ukraine. He emphasized that such support could influence Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decisions regarding the war.
Concerns had been growing in Ukraine and among its European allies about the US potentially strengthening its ties with Russia, especially after former President Donald Trump returned to office. Tensions between Trump and Zelensky have escalated in recent weeks, particularly as Trump criticized Ukraine and negotiated with Putin to reduce sanctions in exchange for Russian diesel.
Zelensky noted that if the US Congress begins discussing significant support for Ukraine, it could lead Putin to reconsider his strategy. He believes that increased support might push both sides toward negotiations and possibly peace.
In related developments, US-mediated talks between Russia and Ukraine are scheduled to take place next week in Abu Dhabi, marking a resumption of discussions that had been stalled since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East earlier this year.
