ADC Claims Court Ruling Against Atiku Linked to Sokoto Event Turnout

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has claimed that the turnout at its recent political event in Sokoto affected the timing of a court ruling that voided its leadership and presidential candidacy. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s spokesperson, made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics.

Abdullahi stated that the ADC would challenge the court’s decision, which he described as part of ongoing efforts to hinder the party’s political activities. He accused the ruling party of trying to maintain power and limit democratic choices for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.

He expressed frustration, saying, “We’ve spent more time in the courts than we’ve spent on the campaign grounds, thanks to the ruling party.” Abdullahi suggested that the court expedited its ruling in response to the positive turnout and reactions from the Sokoto event.

Despite the setback, Abdullahi expressed confidence in the ADC’s ability to contest the ruling through legal means. He mentioned that the party plans to apply for a stay of execution and appeal the judgment. He warned that if the ruling remains, it could prevent the ADC from fielding candidates in upcoming elections.

“What is endangered is not the African Democratic Congress. What is endangered is Nigeria as a country and our democracy as we’ve known it,” he said. Abdullahi emphasized that the party’s message of change and improved living conditions has gained support across the country and urged that Nigerians should be allowed to choose their leaders freely.

He concluded by affirming that the ADC would persist in its legal challenges against the ruling.
