Nigeria and Türkiye Strengthen Cooperation Against Misinformation
Nigeria and Türkiye are deepening their partnership to fight misinformation and strengthen media cooperation. This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting in Istanbul on Saturday, where Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, met with Türkiye’s Head of the Directorate of Communications, Professor Burhanettin Duran.
Idris expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s invitation to the TRT World Forum and acknowledged Türkiye’s growing influence in Africa. He emphasized the shared goals of both nations in promoting peace, security, and cultural understanding.
During the meeting, Idris highlighted the importance of combating fake news and the misuse of artificial intelligence. He stressed that these issues pose threats to public trust and security. He also pointed out Nigeria’s role as the host of the world’s first International Media and Information Literacy Institute, aimed at improving media literacy and resilience against misinformation.
Professor Duran recognized Nigeria as a key partner in regional and international matters. He expressed Türkiye’s commitment to enhancing cultural ties and professional exchanges, particularly in communication and broadcasting. Duran proposed signing agreements to facilitate cooperation in these areas.
Looking ahead, Duran invited Nigeria to attend the Sixth International Strategic Communication Summit in Istanbul in January 2027. Both officials agreed on the importance of ongoing collaboration and the need to use communication and cultural diplomacy to promote mutual development.
