Civil Society Groups Demand Action on Gas Seepage in Bille Kingdom

A group of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has launched a “No Clean-Up, No Vote” campaign, urging the Nigerian government to take immediate action regarding a severe gas seepage problem in Bille Kingdom, located in Rivers State. This campaign was announced during a presentation of their position paper titled “Justice for Bille: A Call for National Emergency That Cannot Wait” at the Social Action office in Port Harcourt.

The coalition, which includes the People’s Assembly and Bille Working Group, is calling for Bille to be recognized as a national emergency due to the ongoing environmental and health crisis. Reports indicate that the gas seepage has already resulted in eleven deaths since it began in February 2026.

During the event, several representatives spoke about the dangers posed by the gas eruption. They highlighted how it affects daily life, especially cooking, as gas leaks have caused fires and explosions. These incidents have not only led to loss of life but have also destroyed homes and livelihoods.

The coalition is demanding urgent government intervention to prevent further harm and to provide support for those affected. They argue that residents should not support political candidates who do not show a real commitment to resolving the crisis.

The campaign is expanding across the Niger Delta, focusing on environmental justice and accountability from political leaders. Key demands include relocating residents to safer areas, providing clean drinking water and healthcare, and compensating families impacted by the crisis.

Additionally, they are calling for a Presidential Task Force to oversee efforts to address the situation and to hold oil and gas companies accountable. The coalition hopes that President Bola Tinubu’s upcoming visit to Rivers State will bring attention to the plight of Bille residents and lead to action on their demands.

They have made it clear that their support for political candidates will depend on their commitment to concrete plans for environmental cleanup and restoration in the Niger Delta, emphasizing that without action, there will be no votes.
