Nigerian Workers Deserve More Than Promises – Speaker Abbas Marks May Day with Call for Reform

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and his Deputy, Benjamin Kalu, have paid heartfelt tributes to Nigerian workers in celebration of this year’s Workers’ Day, acknowledging their vital contributions to national development.

In a goodwill message released Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Speaker Abbas described Nigerian workers as the “engine room” of the economy and praised the organized labour unions—the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC)—for their unwavering commitment to the nation’s progress.

“The contributions of Nigerian workers to the growth and development of our country cannot be quantified,” Abbas said, reaffirming the House’s commitment to recognizing workers as “partners in progress.”

He also applauded the labour unions for their understanding and cooperation with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration amid ongoing economic challenges, particularly in matters concerning workers’ welfare. Abbas emphasized the need for improved conditions and stronger support for the workforce.

“As we continue to navigate these difficult economic realities, workers deserve better welfare,” the Speaker noted. “Their resilience, patriotism, and productivity remain crucial to sustaining our fatherland.”

In a separate statement issued Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Livinus Nwabughiogu, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu echoed similar sentiments. He commended Nigerian workers for their perseverance and resilience, emphasizing their central role in shaping the country’s development.

Kalu lauded the federal government’s efforts to improve civil servants’ welfare, particularly the National Assembly’s swift approval of the increased minimum wage. He urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive as the Tinubu administration implements economic reforms, which he said are designed to deliver long-term benefits.
