Governor AbdulRazaq Mourns Gbajibo Boat Tragedy, Urges Strict Adherence to Water Safety Measures

In the wake of the devastating boat accident in Gbajibo-Mudi community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has expressed profound sorrow and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, May 15, 2025, claimed the lives of 37 traders and left 16 others injured. The victims were returning to their homes in Niger State after attending a market in Gbajibo when the overloaded boat capsized due to rising waters of the River Niger.

Governor AbdulRazaq, through his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, described the accident as “painful and unacceptable,” emphasizing the recurring issue of neglecting safety protocols, particularly the non-use of life jackets provided by the government. He urged boat operators and passengers to adhere strictly to safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.

In a show of solidarity, the Kwara State government dispatched a delegation led by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Engr. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, to the affected community. The delegation conveyed the governor’s sympathies and announced a donation of N2 million to assist with medical expenses for the injured and support the families of the deceased. Additionally, the government pledged to refurbish the local Basic Health Centre and primary school to enhance community welfare.

This incident underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures and strict enforcement of regulations governing water transportation in the region.
