Court Declines to Halt Owa Obokun Coronation Amidst Tight Security in Ilesa

The coronation of Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup as the 41st Owa Obokun of Ijesaland proceeded today under heightened security measures, following the Osun State High Court’s refusal to grant an injunction to stop the ceremony. Justice J. Agboola, presiding over the case in Ilesa, declined the application for an interlocutory injunction, citing procedural delays and incomplete service of court processes. The judge emphasized that both parties had not demonstrated sufficient seriousness in prosecuting the case, noting that pleadings had been extended over four months instead of the stipulated 60 days.

The legal challenge was initiated by Prince Michael Adewale Arimoro of the Arimoro family, who contested the selection process of Oba Haastrup, alleging it violated traditional protocols. Arimoro described the emergence of Oba Haastrup as “a rape of the tradition and culture of the Ijesa people,” asserting that the real traditional ruler would soon emerge through proper channels.

Despite the ongoing legal dispute, the coronation ceremony was held as scheduled, with significant security presence to maintain order. The event marks a significant moment in Ijesaland’s history, as Oba Haastrup assumes the revered position of Owa Obokun.

The court has adjourned the case to July 3, 2025, for further hearing, leaving the final resolution of the chieftaincy dispute pending.
