Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, a former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu is funding his effort to revive corruption allegations against Atiku Abubakar. Agbonayinma insists that his petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is not driven by political motives.
His comments came after a publication linked his recent 14-day ultimatum to the EFCC with President Tinubu. Agbonayinma expressed his intention to take legal action against Karl Von Batten, who is also known as Ikemefuna Okeke, for suggesting he was acting on behalf of Tinubu or any political party.
Agbonayinma, who is a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized that his push for accountability is a personal initiative. He stated, “I stand by my call for accountability and the rule of law,” reinforcing that his actions are based on his belief in proper investigations of public officials.
He noted that investigations by the US Senate and Homeland Security have already taken place, and he urged the EFCC to proceed with its own investigation into the allegations against Atiku. Agbonayinma clarified that his petition is not tied to any political party, asserting that it is about ensuring that no one is above the law.
He challenged Atiku’s legal team to respond to the substance of his petition rather than dismiss it as politically motivated. Agbonayinma warned that he would not tolerate the misuse of his image to promote misleading narratives and is ready to pursue legal action against those responsible.
He concluded by stating, “I acted as a Nigerian, not as Tinubu’s representative. Let the record be clear.”
