Aiyedatiwa Honors Late Akeredolu on 2nd Anniversary, Hailing the ‘Amotekun Architect’ as a Visionary Mentor in Akure Statement

In a somber yet celebratory reflection on the life of a political titan, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has officially honored the memory of the late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on the second anniversary of his transition.

In a statement released today, Saturday, December 27, 2025, Aiyedatiwa described his former principal as a courageous leader who “literally emptied himself” in the service of the Sunshine State and the Nigerian nation. The anniversary marks two years since Akeredolu passed away in a German hospital following a protracted battle with leukemia and prostate cancer.

The Governor particularly emphasized Akeredolu’s enduring impact on Nigeria’s security architecture. As the then-Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum, Akeredolu was the driving force behind the establishment of the Amotekun Corps, a move that Aiyedatiwa credited with drastically reducing criminality across the region and laying the groundwork for the current national dialogue on decentralized policing.

“Arakunrin was not just a leader; he was a prophet who saw tomorrow,” Aiyedatiwa remarked. “His advocacy for state policing and his insistence on the truth, even at personal cost, redefined what it means to lead with conviction. We are not just remembering a former governor; we are celebrating a legacy that is still very much alive in the institutions he built.”

The tribute also touched on the personal bond between the two men. Aiyedatiwa, who served as Akeredolu’s deputy before succeeding him, noted that the late SAN’s belief in succession planning and institutional stability was instrumental during the state’s recent political transitions. He assured the people of Ondo that his administration would continue to complete the landmark projects initiated by his predecessor, including the ongoing flyover in Akure and various industrial hubs.

As memorial services were held in Owo and Akure, the Governor concluded by urging the citizens of Ondo State to honor Akeredolu’s memory by remaining united. “We find solace in the fact that he lived a purposeful life. The best way we can honor him is to ensure that the justice and equity he fought for remains the cornerstone of our governance.”
