Akume Urges Northern Politicians to Honor Power Rotation Agreement

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has urged northern politicians to honor the power rotation agreement between the North and South. He believes this will allow the South to complete its eight-year term in the presidency.

Akume made his remarks in Abuja while meeting with the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria. He described the power rotation as a crucial understanding that has helped maintain fairness and democracy in Nigeria since 1999.

The agreement was established in Kaduna in 1999 during discussions among governors-elect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political leaders. They recognized the need for a fair distribution of political power to keep Nigeria united.

According to Akume, the leaders agreed that presidential power should alternate between the North and South every eight years, starting with the South. This arrangement was intended to promote political balance and build trust among different regions.

He expressed concern over northern candidates seeking the presidency before the current southern administration completes its term. Akume emphasized that the North should adhere to the established power-sharing sequence.

Akume also acknowledged the charitable work of the Knights, who have supported vulnerable individuals through medical aid, assistance for inmates, and community projects such as boreholes and school renovations. He highlighted the importance of private efforts in addressing social and economic challenges.

He concluded by stating that the principle of power rotation should not be seen as a temporary measure but as a vital agreement for ensuring fairness and stability in the country.
