Anita Mui’s Ashes Reported Missing from Hong Kong Monastery

The ashes of Anita Mui, a famous Hong Kong actress and pop star known as the “Madonna of Asia,” are reported missing from a monastery in Hong Kong. Police confirmed this on October 13, 2026.

Anita Mui, who passed away from cervical cancer at the age of 40 in 2003, was a major figure in Cantopop, a popular music genre in the Cantonese language. Her family reported the missing urn to police in July after a fan noticed it was gone, but they kept it private until recently.

On what would have been Mui’s birthday, her family expressed their distress over the slow progress of the police investigation, leading to a wave of anger and sadness among her fans. One fan shared their heartbreak on social media, reflecting the feelings of many who admired the singer.

Hong Kong police have referred the case to the Regional Crime Unit of New Territories South for further investigation. They stated that no arrests have been made yet and that they will continue to work with the family and other relevant parties.

Anita Mui was known for her powerful voice and dynamic stage presence, making her a beloved figure in the music industry. She set records during her career, including performing for 28 consecutive nights to sold-out audiences in the 1980s.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Hong Kong. Last year, the ashes of martial arts star Lau Kar-leung also went missing, and his family faced blackmail before recovering them months later.
