Atiku Abubakar Demands Clarity from INEC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify recent changes in its key departments as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. He made this request through his Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, on Sunday.

Atiku expressed concerns about reports indicating that Director Isa Magaji Gum was moved from the Electoral Operations Department to the Voter Registry Department. He noted that Mrs. Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi was appointed to lead Electoral Operations, while Dr. Lawrence Bayode was identified as the head of Information and Communication Technology.

He urged INEC to explain these decisions and publish the criteria used for these appointments and redeployments. Atiku emphasized the need for transparency to address public concerns regarding the integrity of these sensitive positions.

Additionally, Atiku asked INEC to confirm reports about contracts for printing sensitive materials for the upcoming elections. He mentioned that there are claims a significant portion of these materials may be allocated to a company based in France, while another local company, Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc, might handle printing for several states.

He called for INEC to disclose the names of companies involved, the materials they are printing, and the states affected. Atiku also sought clarification on whether Hitech or any associated company has received a contract for these materials.

Atiku stressed the importance of using local printing capabilities and ensuring accountability for critical election documents. He also raised concerns about the Central Bank of Nigeria’s current printing allocations for higher-denomination banknotes, urging transparency in this area as well.

He concluded by stating that INEC officials must ensure a credible election process and that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) would monitor preparations and report their findings to both domestic and international observers.
