Bauchi State Launches Safe School Committee to Enhance Student Safety

The Bauchi State government has officially launched the Safe School Steering Committee to improve safety in schools. This initiative aligns with the Nigeria National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools established in 2021. The inaugural meeting took place at the Medical and Health Workers’ Union Secretariat in Bauchi.

The Chairman of the Committee emphasized the need for a safe school environment, stating that safety involves more than just physical barriers. It requires community involvement and proactive measures to prevent violence and insecurity that could disrupt education.

During the meeting, members discussed their responsibilities, which include developing safety policies, monitoring school safety programs, and assessing risks that could affect students. They also highlighted the importance of community support in ensuring that no child is denied education due to fear or violence.

The Acting State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Adamu Umar Sarkinyara, praised the government for taking this step. He noted the urgent need to address issues like bullying, drug abuse, and violence in schools. The agency plans to help translate safety policies into local languages to make them accessible to everyone.

The Committee will also conduct assessments of risks in six local government areas, focusing on issues like drug hotspots and violence. They aim to create a reporting system for students and parents to anonymously report safety concerns.

Members resolved to meet monthly to review progress and ensure the implementation of safety measures. They will also distribute educational materials about school safety and engage with local communities to foster a safer learning environment.
