Economic Recovery Shows Disparity Between Businesses and Households in Nigeria

In Nigeria, economic recovery is being felt differently by businesses and families. A recent survey shows that while many businesses are expanding, households are facing increasing financial pressures.

In late September, a factory manager reported positive news from a survey by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). For the fourth consecutive month, the survey indicated that business activity is growing. The index measuring this growth rose to 53.0, suggesting that new orders are coming in and inventory levels are increasing.

In contrast, a parent who did not fill out a survey expressed concern after paying school fees and bills, realizing there was little money left for other expenses. According to the CBN’s household survey, many families feel more pessimistic about their financial situations compared to the previous month. This survey showed that families are worried about rising prices and feel that buying a home or a car is out of reach.

While businesses report a broadening recovery, the situation for households is different. The survey showed that many families are struggling with their financial conditions, with significant drops in their perceived income and financial stability. Even though inflation has eased slightly, families still find that prices are not falling, just rising more slowly.

For President Tinubu, this presents a challenge. He can point to growing business activity, but this does not resonate with families who are still facing difficulties with everyday expenses. The opposition parties see this as an opportunity to highlight these struggles, but they also face the challenge of proposing effective solutions.

As the country looks toward 2027, the gap between business recovery and household struggles will be critical to watch. The real story of recovery will depend on whether families can feel the benefits of this growth in their daily lives.
