EFCC and NFIU Launch Forensic Crackdown on Alleged Coup Funders

In a significant escalation of the probe into the alleged coup plot against the Federal Government, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) have officially joined the investigation to track the financial backers of the conspiracy.

The anti-graft agencies are working in close collaboration with military investigators to perform a forensic investigation on the bank accounts of both the detained soldiers and the civilians implicated in the plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Security sources, speaking on Friday, October 31, 2025, confirmed that the core of the EFCC and NFIU’s mandate is to unravel the entire financial flow associated with the alleged subversion. The forensic analysis includes a rigorous review of transactions deposits, withdrawals, and transfers over an extended period to identify any suspicious patterns and determine the true origins of the funds.

The probe has been significantly widened to cover the associates and business partners of the key suspects, reflecting the complexity and scale of the alleged financial dealings. There are strong indications that the authorities have already frozen the bank accounts of some of the individuals under suspicion to prevent further movement of funds.

This joint crackdown gained momentum following the recent discovery of an alleged transfer of 45 billion Naira from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), with funds reportedly channeled to those involved in the plot. The investigation is relying heavily on the expertise of the financial intelligence agencies to connect the dots between the financiers and the alleged plotters, as the military continues to hold the 16 officers arrested in connection with the case. The anti-graft agencies’ involvement signals the seriousness with which the government is pursuing the money trail linked to the attempted subversion.
