Federal Government Launches Three Strategic Initiatives to Strengthen Families and Combat Poverty

In a concerted effort to enhance family cohesion and alleviate poverty, the Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled three comprehensive programs under the Renewed Hope Agenda. These initiatives aim to address the multifaceted challenges facing Nigerian families, particularly in urban areas grappling with economic hardships and social disruptions.

  1. National Family Strengthening and Development Programme (NFSDP):
This flagship initiative is designed to tackle issues such as domestic violence, fragile support systems, and socio-cultural disruptions. Targeting over five million Nigerians initially, the program adopts a community-driven approach tailored to the unique needs of all 774 Local Government Areas. By fostering resilience and unity within families, the NFSDP seeks to create a stable foundation for national development.

  2. National Guidelines for Alternative Care of Children:
Recognizing the importance of providing a nurturing environment for all children, the government has introduced guidelines to ensure that children outside their natural homes grow up “in love, dignity, and protection.” These guidelines complement the National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children, reinforcing the commitment to child welfare and protection.

  3. Nigerian for Women Programme Scale-Up:
Building on the success of previous initiatives, this program aims to empower 4.5 million women across the federation. By providing resources, training, and support, the initiative seeks to enhance women’s economic participation and leadership, thereby contributing to poverty reduction and societal advancement.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, emphasized the collaborative nature of these programs, stating that their success hinges on partnerships with state governments, NGOs, development partners, and traditional and religious leaders. She remarked, “Families are not secondary but central to our national development strategy.”

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to address the root causes of poverty and social disintegration, reflecting the government’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all Nigerians.
