Former Police Chief Calls for Reforms to Address Nigeria’s Security Issues

The former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has urged for significant reforms in Nigeria’s approach to security. He believes that simply deploying more weapons will not solve the country’s ongoing security problems. Egbetokun made these remarks during a keynote speech at a conference at Lead City University in Ibadan.

He pointed out that the rise in insecurity is linked to failures in governance and socio-economic issues. Egbetokun argued that the government needs to improve the living conditions of citizens to prevent crime and extremist beliefs from taking root. He stated that security strategies should focus on the daily needs of Nigerians, such as access to food, jobs, and healthcare.

According to Egbetokun, addressing poverty and unemployment is crucial. He warned that without addressing these issues, young people may turn to extremist groups. He emphasized that security should extend beyond just protecting borders and property; it should also include the welfare and dignity of citizens.

Egbetokun criticized the current security framework, saying it is inadequate for Nigeria’s large population. He proposed a multi-level policing system that includes federal, state, and community involvement, with clear roles and responsibilities. However, he cautioned that transferring policing powers to local levels must be done carefully to ensure effectiveness.

At the conference, other speakers, including Prof. Benjamin Aluko, highlighted the global challenges affecting security, such as conflicts and social tensions. They stressed that effective security governance is essential for promoting peace and justice.

Prof. Kabiru Adeyemo, the Vice-Chancellor of Lead City University, echoed the call for a people-centered approach to security. He noted that true security involves ensuring citizens can live fulfilling lives without fear. Adeyemo emphasized that strong governance and public trust are vital for stability in society.
