Gunmen Attack PDP Meetings in Calabar, Injuring Three People

On Friday, gunmen disrupted meetings organized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Calabar South, Cross River State, injuring at least three people. The violence took place at two locations: the Palace of the Paramount Ruler and the African Club along Calabar Road.

According to Sir Arthur Jarvis Archibong, the PDP’s governorship candidate, the attackers opened fire during the meeting at the palace, leading to injuries. The injured were taken to a hospital for treatment. Archibong reported that the violence continued at the African Club, where vehicles belonging to party members were damaged.

The PDP had informed the police about their meetings and expected security support. Approximately 3,000 supporters attended the consultations. Despite the attacks, the party chose not to retaliate and instead sought protection from the Commissioner of Police.

Archibong expressed concern that ongoing disruptions could threaten democracy and law and order ahead of the 2027 elections. He urged that the party should not be blamed if such incidents escalate further.

PDP Deputy Governorship Candidate, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, called for calm among supporters and condemned the attacks on the party’s meetings with traditional leaders. He reported that the injured were recovering and urged security agencies to enhance protection for citizens.

Mike Ojisi, the PDP State Publicity Secretary, called the incidents alarming and requested an investigation by the police. He emphasized the need for political activities to occur without violence.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State denied any involvement in the attacks, urging the PDP to look elsewhere for the culprits. The Cross River State Police Command confirmed they were aware of the incidents and had deployed officers to maintain order.
