High School Students Protest Across France for Better Learning Conditions

High school students in France held new protests on Thursday, October 8, 2026, demanding better learning conditions. This comes amid ongoing demonstrations that have been taking place for several days across the country.

Since late September, students have blocked entrances to many high schools. While some protests have been peaceful, there have been instances of violence, including clashes with riot police. Student union leaders called for more demonstrations, with a major rally planned in Paris.

In a recent address, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu promised a plan to address the issues by the end of October. However, many students expressed skepticism about his commitment, feeling that the situation is urgent and requires immediate action.

Students have raised concerns about a lack of teachers, overcrowded schedules, and poor classroom conditions. On Thursday morning, classes were partially or completely suspended in over 300 schools, according to the education ministry.

In response to the unrest, the Interior Minister announced the suspension of stun grenades used by police during protests. This decision follows reports of injuries among both students and police, including a serious incident where a 15-year-old lost a hand.

As the protests continue, student leaders are calling for larger demonstrations next week and are seeking direct meetings with government officials to discuss their demands.
