House of Representatives Calls for Urgent Action on Ebola Case in Abuja

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to improve the country’s response to Ebola following a confirmed case in Abuja. The call for action came after a woman arriving from Uganda tested positive for the virus on October 20, 2026.

During a session on Tuesday, lawmakers emphasized the need for the quick release of funds to health agencies. These funds are intended to enhance efforts in monitoring, contact tracing, and laboratory testing to prevent further spread of the virus.

Amobi Ogah, a representative from Abia State, sponsored the motion. He highlighted the seriousness of Ebola, which can be fatal if not detected early. Ogah warned that delays in testing and isolating infected individuals could worsen the situation and strain the healthcare system.

The lawmakers pointed out several challenges, including a lack of public awareness, shortages of necessary supplies, and insufficient preparedness among healthcare workers. They stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among various government agencies and collaboration with international health organizations.

The House unanimously adopted the motion, urging the Federal Government to mobilize health agencies at all levels and keep them alert to manage the outbreak effectively. They specifically called on the Ministry of Finance to release all necessary funds to support health agencies in their response efforts.

Additionally, the House Committee on Infectious Diseases will monitor the situation and report back on the steps being taken to prevent further transmission of the virus.
