Igbo Leaders Reject Abuja Restructuring Communiqué Over Territorial Fragmentation

Tensions have flared across the political landscape as prominent South-East stakeholders, operating under the banner of the Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), categorically rejected the official communiqué issued from a high-profile national restructuring conference in Abuja.

The rejection centers on deep-seated grievances regarding how the proposed regional mapping treats indigenous Igbo populations residing outside the current five states of the South-East. Leaders argue that the framework attempts to artificially carve up ancestral communities in regions like Rivers and Delta (Anioma), effectively diluting their collective political voice and isolating the South-East from direct maritime and economic corridors.

According to delegates who attended the summit, including academic and policy experts, the conference proceedings disregarded consensus protocols and sidelined comprehensive position papers submitted by the Igbo delegation in favor of a pre-drafted agenda.

“We will not accept a regional arrangement that divides and balkanizes indigenous Igbo-speaking communities simply because those territories fall outside today’s administrative boundaries,” a senior stakeholder close to the delegation stated. “Any genuine restructuring of Nigeria must be built on absolute equity, historical truth, and mutual respect, rather than covert designs to weaken a people.”

Beyond the rejection of the restructuring blueprint, the ILT reiterated longstanding demands addressing regional marginalization, economic inclusion, and the broader push for structural justice as the country edges closer to the 2027 general elections.
