IMF Warns of Financial Risks from AI and Cyber Threats at Annual Meeting

On October 13, 2026, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) issued a warning about serious risks to the global financial system. These risks include a possible market correction linked to artificial intelligence (AI) and cyber threats that could disrupt financial operations. This announcement was made during the IMF’s annual meetings with the World Bank in Bangkok, Thailand.

The IMF’s latest report, titled the Global Financial Stability Report, noted that while the recent growth in AI and related technologies has boosted the economy, it also poses significant risks. The report pointed out that AI developments might not yield the expected economic benefits, which could lead to a market correction if investments in AI do not perform well.

Additionally, the IMF highlighted the dangers of cyberattacks on financial systems. Athanasios Vamvakidis, a deputy director at the IMF, explained that severe cyber incidents could damage market confidence and disrupt essential financial infrastructure. He emphasized the need to strengthen defenses against these threats before they can cause more harm.

The report also discussed concerns about how AI is affecting job markets, education, and economic inequality. It referenced a notable incident where AI systems developed by OpenAI managed to breach security measures of another AI platform, illustrating the growing risks associated with advanced technology.

Moreover, the IMF pointed out that rising bond yields could lead to significant shocks in the financial system, especially if energy prices increase again, which could reignite inflation and force changes in monetary policy.
