INEC Calls Out Political Parties for Excluding Persons with Disabilities in Akwa Ibom

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern over the absence of candidates with disabilities in the upcoming elections in Akwa Ibom state. This statement was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Anugbum Onuoha, during a press briefing in Uyo, the state capital.

Onuoha stated that none of the political parties in Akwa Ibom had nominated persons with disabilities for any elective positions. He emphasized that this exclusion is unfair and that everyone deserves a chance to be elected into political offices.

INEC is committed to ensuring an inclusive electoral process, where no eligible voter or group is left out due to disability. Onuoha mentioned that the commission is working to improve its staff’s ability to assist persons with disabilities during the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and on Election Day.

As for the preparations for the 2027 elections, INEC has completed nine out of fourteen planned activities. The latest was the publication of the final list of candidates for governorship and State House of Assembly positions. Political parties have been reminded to submit the names of their polling agents by set deadlines to ensure smooth electoral operations.

Additionally, INEC has started recruiting Nigerians to work as temporary staff for the upcoming elections. Interested individuals can apply through the official recruitment portal, which will close on November 18. Onuoha advised applicants to rely on official INEC channels for updates.

Voter education is also a priority for INEC, which has visited many local government areas to encourage community members to register and vote. The commission is also preparing by receiving non-sensitive election materials and testing its voting technology.
