“It’s Too Cute”: President Trump Rules Out Vice Presidency Bid to Bypass Term Limits, Denouncing Loophole
U.S. President Donald Trump has officially ruled out a campaign to run for the Vice Presidency in the 2028 election, firmly dismissing a legal maneuver floated by some of his staunch supporters to keep him in the Oval Office.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday, October 27, 2025, while en route to a meeting with Japan’s new Prime Minister, Trump addressed the highly speculative theory that he could run as a Vice Presidential candidate and later ascend to the top job.
“I’d be allowed to do that,” Trump conceded, referencing the debate surrounding the Constitution. However, he quickly added, “I wouldn’t do that. I think it’s too cute. Yeah, I would rule that out because it’s too cute. I think the people wouldn’t like that. It’s too cute. It’s not it wouldn’t be right.”
The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits any person from being elected President more than twice. Since Trump is currently serving his second elected term, the Vice Presidency scheme was proposed as a non-electoral path back to the Presidency. The idea typically suggests a running mate (such as current Vice President J.D. Vance) would win the election and then resign, allowing Trump to take over.
Despite ruling out the Vice Presidency option, Trump continues to tease the idea of a third term, saying he would “love to do it” and asserting that “there are methods” to achieve it. However, his strong rejection of the Vice Presidency loophole puts an end to one of the most widely discussed scenarios for circumventing constitutional term limits.
