In a recent operation, officials from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and military personnel destroyed two cannabis farms in Edo State, Nigeria. This joint effort took place on September 23, 2026, in Eko Camp, Illushi, located in the Esan South-East Local Government Area.
The operation resulted in the destruction of cannabis plantations covering over half a hectare, with an estimated total yield of more than 1,360 kilograms. Additionally, 107 kilograms of processed cannabis, including seeds, were also destroyed.
During the operation, two men, Ajeh Egwuda, 43, and Nonso Ajodhe, were arrested. Both suspects are from the local area and reportedly turned to cannabis farming due to poverty and peer pressure. Ajeh was found with a smaller plot yielding about 170 kilograms of cannabis, while Nonso had a larger plot with an estimated yield of over 1,190 kilograms.
Mitchell Ofoyeju, the Edo NDLEA Commander, stated that this operation highlights their ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the region. He warned those involved in illegal activities that the NDLEA is committed to eradicating cannabis cultivation from their communities.
Ofoyeju emphasized the importance of community involvement in this fight against drugs. He encouraged local residents to share information that could help identify other members of cannabis networks. The NDLEA plans to strengthen partnerships with traditional leaders and other security agencies to enhance their efforts.
He also expressed gratitude to Brig. Gen. Ahmed Balogun, the Commanding Officer of the Nigeria Army 4 Brigade, for supporting their drug enforcement initiatives.
